Hunter Mahan Golf
Swing Analysis
by
Robert Cotter
Professional
Golf Ball Engineer
Director
of Golf Swing Instruction, Instant Golf®
Hunter
Mahan shot back to back 65's during the last 2 rounds
of the 2010 Phoenix Open, charged past Rickie Fowler, and pocketed
the winner's check of $1,008,000.
His
Sunday round highlights included an eagle and 2 birdies on
the back nine. The eagle came as a result of a stunning 250
yard 2nd shot that stopped (like a short iron) just 7 feet
past the pin. In my opinion, it is the Shot of the Year in the
young
2010
season.
Surprisingly,
it is only his 2nd victory on Tour having also won the 2007 Travelers
Championship.
But
his golf swing, cool demeanor, and talent have been widely recognized
on Tour as he was a captain's pick for both Jack Nicklaus at
the 2007 President's Cup, and Paul Azinger at the 2008 Ryder
Cup.
At
the latter event, the typically stoic Mahan (veiled in his trademark
Sundog sunglasses) buried a 40+ putt on 17 in his match against
Paul
Casey which led to
a
crucial
half
point
for the US. He thrilled the viewers with a fist pump celebration
that sent shock waves throughout the spectators and his opponent.
Hunter's
golf swing is definitely top 5 on tour. It is
precise, powerful, and efficient. There
is no wasted motion (or slop, as I call it). You can set your
watch to his motion.
This
guy sets up to the ball with the best of them. He settles comfortably
into the balls and heels of his feet. He is balanced and ready
to go. A few peeks at the target, and then he pulls the trigger
and starts his back swing.
His
swing plane is fairly "flat" (or Hogan-like) relative
to his peers. But the shaft is always under control. He doesn't
get
the club stuck behind him on the way back. Through impact,
he really compresses the ball for max distance and spin control.
In
fact, during the Phoenix Open, he was ranked #1 in greens
in regulation (GIR) and #6 in driving accuracy.
Again, that precision.
Now
I'd like to spend the rest of this report on what I feel are
some of the important keys to Mahan's golf swing.
As
mentioned, Hunter has a great, balanced set-up or address position.
His weight is evenly distributed between the entire platforms
of the feet. His feet, knees, hips, and shoulders are on a line
parallel
to his target line. Awesome.
But
this
is really astounding..
Check
out this address and top of the back swing sequence.
As
proof of his incredible balance and precision, Hunter maintains
his posture and levels right to the top of his back swing:

You
could set a book on his head at address and it would stay there
at the top. What a visual to learn from.
On
any given day you can walk up and down your local driving range
and see well intended golfers bobbing up and down on their back
swings. This dipping or raising immediately changes the shape
of the swing
arc, pulls the club off line, and makes a repeating golf
swing virtually impossible.
Next
time you tee it up on the course or at the range, view the above
image in your mind's eye. Instead of trying to keep the head
still, which is a restrictive move, think about
keeping the head level which is a positive, balance inducing
thought.
It's
fine if your head moves slightly away form the target on the
back swing while it maintains its level. The head (a 17 pound
weight) should stay over the coiling body... let it follow that
lead.
How
does Mahan maintain his balance and levels so beautifully?
He
is powering his back swing with the core of the body.
That inner section of the torso and upper thighs are driving
that swing
motion; moving that club up and around to a stable, solid,
top of the back swing position. He is now ready for the down
swing:

Now
this
may surprise you..
I
pointed out Hunter's iron and driving accuracy statistics for
the 4 rounds of his recent win as a key to his success.
You
may be shocked to learn that even though he shot a pair
of 65's on the weekend:
He
ranked only 71st in the field in putts per round
and still
took the trophy!
That's
proof that a repeating golf swing is the core of real improvement
and lower scores in this game.
In
fact, legendary golfer Byron Nelson, winner of 52 PGA Tour events
including 11 in a row once commented to the
effect that "it's hard to beat a long, straight
driver".
He
would know. Byron's swing was so precise and machine like,
they modeled the first mechanical golfer after his motion and
called
it the "Iron Byron". I've spent many hours testing
balls with that great machine.
In
addition,
Nelson and Mahan's down swings are the result
of what came before them (solid set-ups, proper sequence of motion,
balance in the back swing, etc..).
But
be sure that their heads don't
remain level through
impact and beyond.
Hence,
the
down swing is a totally Different Animal.
The
forces created are tremendous, even for the senior or slower
swing speed player. Different muscles are engaged and dynamic
balance must be maintained by calling on specific parts of the
body. And it all takes place in 1/2 second!
From
this solid position (on the right), Mahan can initiate the down
swing with what I call The
Key To A Repeating Golf Swing and
ride the motion right to his finish position.
He
and all create players, past and present, male and female, are
performing The Key whether they are
consciously aware of it or not.
When
The Key is performed correctly,
the down swing will be on auto pilot. You will be held captive
by your own great swing.
Impact
sounds like a gunshot (especially off the driver) and the golf
ball is compressed as efficiently as possible. You will use all
of your available swing speed with no power leaks, just like
Hunter.
This
January, I introduced the 6th edition of "The

Let
me show you exactly how to deliver the club head right back
through the ball at impact with tremendous power and control.
Thousands of golfers, from beginners to scratch
players, have put The Key to work
in their games and the results have been astounding (over
250 testimonials on file).
In
fact, the following is a note typical of the type that hit
my inbox all week. It is genuine and unsolicited:

"First
ever even par round"
"Hi
Robert,
I
just wanted to pass on that over the last few weeks
I have being playing better and better, until the
peak which was just yesterday.
I
played at a local course and for the first time in
my life I shot under 80, and not
just under. I hit 38, 36. A day of firsts, first
ever even par round, first time in the 70's, 4 birdies,
just an all round amazing result.
I
owe a fair bit of it to you as I am adhering strictly
to your teaching.
Thanks again and best regards,
Dale
N. - Maylasia
P.S. I have just received 2 dozen (name removed) golf
balls, the ball you recommended for my game (although the score yesterday
was with a (name removed), needless to
say I'm starting to love this ball quite a lot) and the next time out
I intend to try this ball. I'll check in with you early in the new
year to see if there is anything else that you recommend."

"your
instruction clears the head"
Robert,
"I
am sure you have received many testimonials in the
past but how many within the first few hours.
I
purchased & read your e-book this morning - as
usual, after reading I needed to go to the practice
range to see if it at least worked sometimes for
me before committing any further time - patience
is not one of my virtues.
Whilst
I hit the ball well & hit what I was aiming at
most of the time that is not the reason for this
reply.
For
the first time in my 40 years of golf I felt & knew
at the top when I was in a good position to hit
the ball solidly & could predict the outcome
from the top of my swing.
In
short, thank you - I now have the new sensation of
the correct feeling at the top - golf is not a game
of perfect but given 5 minutes practice I am convinced
that "simple" is the answer for the
amateur/social golfer to play good golf without hitting
hundreds of balls per day. - your instruction
clears the head of the thousand thoughts that ruin
scores & a good day out with the boys.
I
started a skeptic who expected the same rehash
of information, instead I am pleasantly surprised."

Same
day, dramatic improvement... Nice going Peter.
I
get notes like these all the time. It doesn't matter whether
you are trying to break 105 or 70, the rate of improvement
is typically rapid once the "bad data" is stripped
from a golfer, and The Key to a repeating golf swing
can begin working its magic.
