Sunday, Jordan Spieth won the 2015 U.S. Open
Championship by 1 shot over Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen.
His spectacular finish on the controversial Chambers Bay layout
secured his 2nd major title of the season as he heads to the
Open Championship at St. Andrews in July.
last few months on the course have been incredible. In November,
he won the Australian Open by 6 shots. Then a
week later, he won the Hero World Challenge in Florida by 10
shots, smashing the scoring record at 26 under par. Then
in March he won the 2015 Valspar Championship, followed
by his dominating 4 stroke win at the Masters
Tournament in April.
may recall that the
young phenom Spieth
also became the first teenager to win a PGA Tour event since
Open in 1931. He accomplished this feat when he won an exciting
sudden-death playoff on
Deere Classic in 2013. As
a 16 year old he also made the cut at the HP Byron Nelson tournament
and finished tied for 16th!
turning pro he has been one of the most consistent players on
Tour. He had 8 top ten finishes in 2014 and banked over $4 million
in on course earnings. He's on fire in
2015 with 11 top ten finishes (including his Valspar,
Masters, and U.S. Open wins) in 18 events.
Spieth and his golf swing are in harmony.
He is long off the tee but not among the leaders.
However, he is ranked 3rd out of 195 players
in Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green. And his 2015 scoring
average per round is an incredible 68.92!
is also very adept at putting which has him at the top
of stats once he is on the green. That means birdies and eagles
for Jordan as evidenced by his impressive total of top 10 finishes.
usually when you have a young gun like Jordan the golf
swing is powered by the "flexibility
of youth". And for those of us over 40 we just don't have
the flexibility of a 30 year old,
let alone a 21 year old! But Jordan's golf swing has some characteristics
that make it very reliable and his swing positions are not back
fact much of his golf swing is old school; before the
days of "paralysis of analysis" and when cookie cutter
swings started to appear.
this report I look at an aspect of Jordan's golf swing
that not only defies modern day convention, but also helps
him split fairways and hit greens under pressure. His
record, both amateur and professional, is the proof.
it isn't a perfect circle, the golf swing has a somewhat circular shape.
Hence, if you have ever seen an "Iron Byron" or modern ball
hitting robot, the shaft and club head revolve around a fixed
axis. This is the mechanical ideal.
with a human golfer it is a different story. Due
to the forces created in the swing motion, the anatomy of humans,
and equipment parameters, there is a small flat spot at the bottom
of the arc in the down swing when a skilled golfer swings a club.
is also a very powerful throwing out motion of
the heavy club head in the down swing that helps a golfer unwind
out of the back swing and smash the ball. This allows Jordan
to buck convention with his back swing. And therein lies a
great tip for us "older" guys.
let's take a look at Jordan's back swing. The most apparent feature
is a Bent Left Arm at the top!:
is something you don't see much these days, especially with a
flexible young golfer.
I would venture to say that less than 1% of modern pros have
arm, it just isn't part of conventional teaching.
it has worked for several great players in the past and
present. The guys that immediately come to mind are:
Strange - Hall
of Fame member, 17 PGA wins including two US Opens.
Westwood - Former
#1 in the world, 22 European and 2 PGA Tour wins.
Peete - Vastly underrated star, 12 PGA Tour wins
including the 1985 Players Championship (his bent left
arm was the result of a childhood accident).
softer, slightly bent left arm is a learned orientation or an
instinct, it is refreshing to see. There is so much emphasis
on perfect positions in the modern game that "feels" or unconventional
moves often get lost.
or bent lead (left for a RH golfer) arm is fine as
long as that arm is Free of Tension. The straight
lead arm concept has been misinterpreted to mean locked or
rigid in order to maintain the swing radius. And golfers at all
skill levels golfers have suffered the results with non-repeating
swings and even physical
Sadly, a tense
lead arm kills swing speed, destroys the club head path, and
prevents a full release of the club. And under pressure, these
effects are magnified for the golfer who attempts to steer a shot
or over control the club in order to prevent a mishit. Usually
the opposite occurs,
and he or she is visiting the woods looking for the ball minutes
Trail and Lead arms have very different roles in the golf
But here's a very useful image to help you with the
job of the lead arm. Note: This does not apply to the trail
your Lead Arm is a Piece of Rope:
A rope is
passive, at least in regards to starting a motion. It also has
no internal structure (skeleton) to make it stiff or rigid. It
has to respond to the forces acting on it. I think of it as a
"spacer" between the shoulder and grip (see above).
This is part
of the reason Jordan and other golfers can play great golf with
a bent lead arm. The forces on the lead arm or rope in the down
swing will straighten it out at impact. In the
case of Calvin Peete, the arm straightened to the limits of his
arm's structure, which was basically where it started at address.
The other wonderful
aspect of this rope concept is how it contributes to a tension
free swing, especially in the down swing. Great players hit fairways
and greens on Sunday. Jordan Spieth shot 63 on Sunday at the
Australian Open in large part because
he limited the tension in his lead arm. His sizzling 64 in
the first round of the 2015 Masters was also a result of
his rhythmic, unrestricted swing (and hot putter).
A tension free
lead arm is part
of the equation to a free and full release of
the club head through impact. This is true whether you
use a traditional straight lead arm or a bent lead arm.
the golfer learns to stop over
extending or locking the elbow on the way to the top, he or she
has taken the
first step to a more compact, powerful back swing. This
back swing that will pay huge dividends on the way back to the
ball at impact, the moment of truth.
- "Is it as simple as taking a more compact backswing?"
not, and if I could explain this to you right
know I would, but this is something you need to see for yourself.
