Tiger Woods and the "New" Golf Swing

by Robert Cotter (About the Author)
Professional Golf Ball Engineer
Director of Golf Swing Instruction, Instant Golf®

After his 79th victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 1 of 5 wins in 2013, Tiger Woods again secured the #1 position in the world golf rankings. Due to limited play in 2014 and a hiatus for microdiscectomy surgery for a pinched nerve he has slipped to #5 but will soon be back on track.

There are a number of reasons why Tiger is finding success with the latest iteration of his golf swing. And the results speak for themselves. He's not only winning, but he is crushing the rest of the field when he tees it up. Don't let the slow start to 2014 fool you, Woods "A" game is lurking as evidenced by his 65 at the 2014 Honda Classic amidst back pain.

After his swing change, Woods gained considerable distance with all his clubs in 2012, and continued to add accurate distance in 2013. He was ranked 17th out of 185 in total driving (distance and accuracy) last year. Before that, years of being in the lower 1/2 of the driving accuracy category cost him at least a dozen wins including a few majors.

His scoring average was also stellar and this combined with solid, albeit streaky putting resulted in an all around PGA Tour ranking of #1 in 2013. Quite an ascension from where he was just a few years ago.

Tiger's new swing, developed in conjunction with Canadian swing coach Sean Foley, is both simple and complex at the same time. This is one of the reasons Woods is still dialing in the new technique, though it looks like he has it mastered.

There is more than one way to swing the club effectively. The best players in the world do 3 things well, regardless of "method". At a minimum, they must accomplish these 3 things at impact:

1) Generate high club head speed which allows for distance potential, especially off the driver.
2) Be able to hit the center of the club face consistently (in fact, wear it out).
3) Control the club face angle and club head path so their side spin (draw, fade) is manageable.

Accomplishing these points starts with the address position, and Tiger's has improved tremendously in the past 12-18 months. It is a big reason for his huge leap in consistency, power, and accuracy.

Here is an image of Woods I shot at an event he won late last year, in fact he dominated that week too. In the picture, he is hitting one of his famous "Stinger" shots off the tee.

Note how Tiger is settling into his address position. You can see he is still adjusting his right hand on the club. He's rocking back and forth, establishing his balance.

Look carefully at his legs and feet. He is feeling and sensing the ground. He's digging into the ground with that right insole. The ground will be exploited in the rest of the swing, as it is with all great ball strikers:

"Ground control" is one tenent of a sound, repeating swing that I first noticed with some of the best players I worked with while designing golf balls.

These top players would hit dozens of golf ball prototypes, either at tournaments or in the testing centers, and I had a firsthand look at their repeating swings.

I also learned a lot from the players who weren't the best ball strikers on Tour. They were missing some key elements that made their swings less efficient, and it showed in their shot quality.

Here's some assistance to help you Feel the Ground Better at Address (Set-up)...

For most shots, distributing the weight 50/50 between the right and left foot is a good rule of thumb at set-up. For a driver, you can even have 60% of the weight on the back (trail) foot as this encourages a slight upsweep through impact.

A golfer should settle into the arches of the feet and allow them to compress. This will activate the feelings in the ball and heel of the feet. They will really come alive! You can see the compression in Tiger's right foot arch above as he prepares to swing.

Here’s a helpful visual representation. Picture this in your mind's eye at address:

There should be about a 60/40 ball to heel distribution of weight within each foot. This gives that slight forward press into the ball of the foot which provides great stability and allows the legs to act like pistons. That is represented by the slightly larger pressure triangle above.

Note: This notion that a golfer sets up or balances on the balls of the feet is nonsense! Sure, there is weight on the balls of the feet, but it is a result of compressing the arches. Tiger has this mastered this in recent months. Prior to that he was back on his heels. This one, simple adjustment has paid huge dividends for Woods.

Watch great players at address. One of my favorite players to study set up to the ball is Hall of Fame member Ernie Els. He grips the ground at address like a cat. He is balanced and relaxed. Ernie’s nickname, “The Big Easy”, speaks to his free flowing, powerful swing; a swing that starts from a balanced set-up position.

When a golfer establishes a comfortable, balanced position at address, there will be less need for compensations at the start of the swing. The swing will be off to a great start.

The stance pressure distribution above is
the foundation of a Tour caliber golf swing.

But let me be very clear, the weight distribution only starts in the pressure distribution above. It changes dramatically throughout the swings of the best players once they are in motion.

The best players know where the weight moves throughout the swing, the high handicap golfer does not. The best ball strikers, the guys that turn heads on the range, center their strikes swing after swing. It's the result of a coordinated symphony of movement.

They execute the downswing (or the money part of the swing) with effortless precision; a crack and the ball is on its way, boring a hole in the sky.

The top players in the world like Tiger, Rory, and Luke all use what I call The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing and ride the motion right to the finish position.

By doing so, they all achieve those 3 points outlined above (swing speed, center contact, club face/head control). They all do it with very different looking golf swings. But they are all using The Key.

The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing results in maximum swing speed and ball speed, so distances increase, and scores drop.

Do you know that in great golf swings, the ultimate goal is more Golf Ball Speed off the clubface?

And the fact is that... Ball Speed is achieved at Impact via the Downswing!

It's achieved from transferring all of that club head mass powerfully into the back of the ball at impact. Club head speed is only part of the equation for ball speed. Tour players, club golfers, and weekend enthusiasts need to smash the center of the club face time and time again, to the point where they begin to wear a nickel size spot in the middle of that face!

There's an old saying, "Center of the club face, Center of the fairway". You can learn to do this easily using The Key to a Repeating Golf Swing, just like I did.

In fact, to the left is one of my actual driver faces. That worn spot is simply the result of repetitive, dead-center strikes. And my swing speed is just slightly over average, but I learned how to harness it all for maximum efficiency.

All great players, past and present, male and female, are performing The Key whether they are consciously aware of it or not. Yet it has nothing to do with the arms, wrists, or gimmicky hand action "tricks" through impact.

When The Key is performed correctly, the downswing will be on auto pilot. You will be held captive by your own great swing.

Impact sounds like a gunshot (especially off the driver) and the golf ball is compressed as efficiently as possible. You will use all of your available swing speed with no power leaks, just like Tiger and company.

I go into detail in the The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing exactly what the secret is to direct, central impact and how to achieve it after only a few swings. Then I show you how to quickly "educate" your body so your Tour caliber downswing swing becomes virtually automatic.

"First ever even par round"

"Hi Robert,

I just wanted to pass on that over the last few weeks I have being playing better and better, until the peak which was just yesterday.

I played at a local course and for the first time in my life I shot under 80, and not just under. I hit 38, 36. A day of firsts, first ever even par round, first time in the 70's, 4 birdies, just an all round amazing result.

I owe a fair bit of it to you as I am adhering strictly to your teaching.

Thanks again and best regards,

Dale N. - Maylasia

P.S. I have just received 2 dozen (name removed) golf balls, the ball you recommended for my game (although the score yesterday was with a (name removed), needless to say I'm starting to love this ball quite a lot) and the next time out I intend to try this ball. I'll check in with you early in the new year to see if there is anything else that you recommend.
"

"your instruction clears the head"

Robert,

"I am sure you have received many testimonials in the past but how many within the first few hours.

I purchased & read your e-book this morning - as usual, after reading I needed to go to the practice range to see if it at least worked sometimes for me before committing any further time - patience is not one of my virtues.

Whilst I hit the ball well & hit what I was aiming at most of the time that is not the reason for this reply.

For the first time in my 40 years of golf I felt & knew at the top when I was in a good position to hit the ball solidly & could predict the outcome from the top of my swing.

In short, thank you - I now have the new sensation of the correct feeling at the top - golf is not a game of perfect but given 5 minutes practice I am convinced that "simple" is the answer for the amateur/social golfer to play good golf without hitting hundreds of balls per day. - your instruction clears the head of the thousand thoughts that ruin scores & a good day out with the boys.

I started a skeptic who expected the same rehash of information, instead I am pleasantly surprised."

Peter V. - Australia

Same day, dramatic improvement... Nice going Peter.

I get notes like these all the time. It doesn't matter whether you are trying to break 105 or 70, the rate of improvement is typically rapid once the "bad data" is stripped from a golfer, and The Key to a repeating golf swing can begin working its magic.
