I teed it up a few months back with some family. Before the round, a fourth was added to our group by the starter.

He was an “older” gent (at some point we learned this guy was in his mid 70’s, 76 I believe).

He had also survived a stroke having lost and then regained most of the use of the right side of his body. His story, in some respects, reminded me of Ben Hogan.

From the start of the round, it was clear our partner had a game plan, and a favorite club. He whacked his Callaway 4 wood off the tee about 180 yards, and whacked the same club off the fairway a comparable distance. A chip and a putt later = par.

He repeated this pattern for the rest of the round. It seemed every time we looked over that 4 wood was in his hands.

His golf swing repeated like nobody’s business. Nothing spectacular, down the fairway, and then on or around the green.

The Result: My money says he broke 80 and probably shot his age.

The Golf Lesson: Every golfer has individual physical characteristics and mannerisms. There are golfers of all shapes and sizes that have succeeded at the highest levels of golf. They have succeeded because they know their strengths and weaknesses.

The strategy is the same whether you’re goal is breaking 100 or 70. Giving it your best shot means hitting your best shot. Familiarity breeds success.

Practice your weaknesses on the range, but use your strengths on the course. If you can hit a 4 or 5 wood 180 yards down the middle then fire that gun time and time again.

Three repeating golf swings with that club has you putting for birdie on a 540 yard par 5.

What golfer wouldn’t want that putt?!

We went our separate ways after the first 18 so I regret I didn’t get a chance to give this gent a Golf Ball Recommendation based on his equipment and swing type.

I bet I could have got him some more distance and accuracy (even though he didn’t need much golf swing help).

Who knows? With the golf ball advice, next round he could have shot even better than his age!

Till next time, hope you can get out on the course this weekend.

But the golfer who treats practice time with an on course, “real world” mentality is way ahead of the typical recreational golfer.

Any fan of Golf is no doubt familiar with 2008 British Open and PGA Champion Padraig Harrington’s work ethic. According to reports, he’s either on the range or in the exercise room when he is not playing.

Add to that an intense practicing of the fundamentals and some of the reasons for his success start to come together.

What can you learn from Padraig’s routine?

When it’s time to practice, find a favorite spot at the end of the range, away from distractions and get down to business.

I firmly believe there are two types of practice, training and simulated play.

In training, you may be working on swing thoughts, positions, and mechanics. This can be a technical time to systematically try new things, get feedback, and make adjustments.

The other type of practice should be simulated play. This gears your mind to real situations on real courses.

Think these Irish eyes saw this shot on the 17th a hundred times before Sunday’s final round?:

Here’s a scenario for your practice time:

Treat the practice stall or area as if it is a real tee box. Stand behind the tee and pick a target, a real target. Not just “towards the 250 sign” but “at the 250 sign”, and better yet at the “5″ in 250. The smaller the target the better.

Imagine this is a real hole. Hit a driver or 3 wood at that sign. For the next shot, use the typical iron that you may use on a 400 yard hole. Now aim at the 150 sign as if it is a pin.

Did you hit it?! If not, what’s left? Take out a wedge and chip to the 25 yd sign, or a target immediately in front of your practice station.

This routine will help you in many ways. It prevents you from getting in that machine gun mode of firing off 25 balls without so much as a break, hoping that the next one is better. It also trains the mind for simulated play.

Next time out on the course, your mind will be more focused on targets and distances, and your decisions will be clearer.

Here Paddy’s “locked and loaded”. He now just needs to execute:

Keeping with the simulated play theme, if you have access to a practice range with real turf, by all means take advantage of this feature.

Hitting mats can be flattering to good and poor swings because you can not take real divots. They are very forgiving as a typical “fat” shot may appear to have been hit purely, or at least salvageable.

Grass practice turf empowers you to hit the ball first and then take a divot. Plus, you will be looking down at real grass which will invariably work into your memory for on course play. Your 7 iron sitting behind that ball on the course will recall the same image from the range.

You may need to practice on synthetic mats first in order to build confidence and that is fine. When you feel ready, make the transition to turf practice and work in the simulated play routine.

When you are finished with a practice session, you will feel like you just played 27 holes (except for the walking)!

And as you leave the range and spot a league member beating balls to no end, just smile knowing you’ve moved one step closer to playing like the current #3 (and moving up) player in the world.

Hit’em straight this weekend – Rob C.

“Use your natural body characteristics and avoid No Man’s Land“

A few weeks back, 26 year old Camilo Villegas shot a 66 during Sunday’s final round at the Tour Championship and took out Sergio Garcia in a playoff for his second win of 2008.

Those spectators who were on hand in the gallery got to see Camilo’s unique golf swing mechanics up close and personal. They also saw a lot of different looking golf swings.

That’s amazing when you consider the swing lasts 1 to 2 seconds for virtually every golfer. So let’s look at how the pros (and you) can hit the same great shots with different looking swings.

The golf swing is an equation with many variables. Alignment, posture, and application of force (to name a few) all contribute to the final quality of your golf shot and the repeatability of your swing. Some of these variables are established at address, while others are learned by trial and error.

Every golfer has individual physical characteristics and mannerisms given to them by their Maker. Some are tall and lean, others are more stout. Some golfers have inherent flexibility, others must rely on more complete, full body rotation in order to achieve a powerful impact.

Luckily, there are golfers of all shapes and sizes who have succeeded at the highest levels of golf.

Jim Furyk has won 13 PGA tournaments including the 2003 US Open and the 2007 Canadian Open with his “unorthodox” swing. He also won the decisive Ryder Cup singles match against Miguel Angel Jimenez back in September:

At #11 in the world rankings, he is on his way to a Hall of Fame career if he can put away another Major tournament in the next few years.

Did these top professionals like Jim (and great “young guns” like Camilo) somehow learn to resist their natural characteristics and manufacture a swing that closely resembled an ideal body type?

Of course not. They took their inherent characteristics and maximized them to their advantage (and reaped the rewards).

We all have our own unique “Brain-Muscle Memory” that will tend move the golf club on a particular path, particularly at the start of the back swing.

Furthermore, if there is memory then there is already a degree of repeatability in that motion. That repeatability is the very thing that can ultimately lead to a Repeating Golf Swing.

And in order to break 80 and go lower, you must have a Repeating Golf Swing.

To illustrate this further, look at these images of the first 1-2 feet of the back swing (the take away) of three different pro golfers, all Major Championship Winners:

1) In the left image, the player has lifted the club head and taken the club away to the outside of the Ball/Target Line.

2) In the middle image, another player moves the club back so that the shaft points at the Ball/Target Line during the take away.

3) In the right image, the player has moved the club head away lower and more to the inside of the Ball Target/Line.

This is Brain-Muscle Memory in action. And you can bet that if one or all of these players tried to re-route that club or change their natural tendency, chances are we would never have known their names.

So when it comes to your own tendencies or nuances:

Don’t fight them… Use them to your advantage!

If you tend to take the club a bit to the inside during your backswing, that’s fine (ever heard of Ray Floyd)?

Have a bit of a circle “outside” on the backswing ala Fred Couples?, no big deal..

After all, isn’t it impact that matters?

Now let’s look at how a golfer’s physical attributes and natural tendencies lead to patterns in his or her golf swing that become positive and automatic. And how resisting or ignoring good muscle memory leads to big problems in the swing.

Meet John. When John first took up the game, he found that as he started his back swing, his natural tendency became to take the club to the inside or a little bit around the body before breaking the club up on the swing plane. This was his tendency. He could repeat this move time and time again without much conscious thought. This is how his hands and arms wanted to move the club.

John could play quite well with this move and shoot in the 80’s. His low round was 77 and he was fairly content with his long game. With more short game practice, he was well on his way to breaking par .

Yes, he was fairly content…that is until he found an article in a popular golf magazine advocating a straight back move with the hands and golf club head. That’s the move that enabled a certain player to groove his golf swing and win a major championship.

Wow, he thought “if it worked for him, it should work for me. I may not turn pro but it will certainly help my game because every one says I take the club back to the inside”.

So off he goes to the practice range and starts pushing that club straight back along the Ball/Target Line at the start of the take away and popping it “into the catcher’s mitt” as the old adage goes. It feels strange at first but soon he is consciously repeating this move and getting the club to waist high.

But when he starts to finish his back swing and plane the club off, there are no longer any familiar golf sensations. All the familiar pressure points on the hands are gone! He can’t feel the club head like he used to with his former move. It is difficult to sense the end of the back swing now and his timing is off.

He manages a few good shots, but it is really the result of feeling out of position and consciously manipulating the clubface on the downswing to make decent contact.

Determined to stick with this “move” he decides to play his league match with his new technique. After all, it worked under pressure for the top pro in the article.

Disaster… he sprays the ball for 6 holes and then tries to switch back to the old “inside takeaway” with limited success. His mind and muscles are fighting each other and a repeatable pattern can’t take form:

Poor John is stuck in “No Man’s Land.”

Have you been stuck in No Man’s land? Or No Woman’s Land? Every golfer at any level has been there at one time or another. It ain’t fun.

When a golfer gets himself stuck in NML it becomes difficult if not impossible to return the club head through the ball without conscious manipulating of the hands and arms.

And with a typical golf down swing lasting 0.5 seconds, it is impossible to achieve solid impact consistently when this is your last resort.

Let me show you how to use the muscle memory you already have to build a reliable, repeating golf swing.

In the new professionally illustrated, 6th edition of “The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing”, I show you exactly how to stay out of No Man’s Land and deliver the club head right back through the ball at impact with tremendous power and control.

In this Special Report, I address a commonly misunderstood feature of the golf swing.

I regularly receive questions from around the world regarding different aspects of the swing and I am happy to oblige whenever I am able. The internet is a wonderful tool in that regard.

One of the most prevalent queries involves a correct golf backswing and is typically asked something to the effect:

“How long should my backswing be …. to parallel or past parallel?”

This is a great question… let’s get to it:

There is a persistent adage in golf that the club shaft should reach a position where it is parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing for a “full or complete backswing”. The logic continues that without achieving that position, you will be incapable of hitting the ball for distance or with maximum power.

In this report I will shatter that myth and show you why the quest for that position at the top is not necessary in today’s game (and why it could be hurting you and your scores).

First, let’s address the origin of the myth. During golf’s early evolution right on up to the 1930’s, golf club technology was is its infancy, at least relative to today’s advancements.

If you have ever seen those old black and white films of Bobby Jones and his long and graceful swing, you have no doubt witnessed his golf club dipping way past parallel during the backswing. In some sequences, it looks as though the shaft might actually smack him on his “hind quarters”!

He hasn’t even finished his backswing yet!

In those days the only shafts available were made of wood, particularly hickory. Because of the inherent flex of the material, a longer swing was necessary in order to give the club head a longer travel distance in order to build up enough speed to deliver a solid blow.

Hence, the shafts were whippier than the steel and composite shafts of today and therefore the swing necessary to maximize their performance reflected that difference.

Steel shafts were approved by the R&A and USGA for use in competition in 1929. With the introduction of steel shafts and later the space age club head alloys, suddenly there was a new way to get the job done.

In essence, just think of the club shaft as the engine of the club:

Better, Stronger Engines = Faster, Longer Rides!

The transfer of momentum from club head to ball was now so much more efficient that the past parallel backswing started to be replaced with a parallel condition for most pros.

An added bonus was that this was also a position of more golf club control. This translated directly into more precise ball striking.

To illustrate this point, Ben Hogan’s early golf swing was very inconsistent and he would allow the club to dip dramatically past parallel at the top of the backswing. He fought an awful hook for many years until he “retooled” his swing after 1948.

The result was the more compact, precise swing (just to parallel with the driver) that enabled him to become arguably the greatest ball striker in the history of the game. Again, his swing allowed him to maximize the club (and ball) technology of the day.

Today’s golf equipment has progressed yet another degree since Hogan’s era. We now have more responsive “tuned” golf club shafts, perimeter weighted irons, low back weighted drivers, and incredibly advanced golf balls. One wonders where Hogan would rank with today’s stars if he were around to tee it up with these new, advanced tools of the trade.

Importantly, today’s players are taking full advantage of the equipment, and their swings again reflect the nature of the new technology.

The most overwhelming feature I see is shorter, more compact golf swings in today’s stars.

More specifically:

The length of the backswing is shortening, yet distance numbers continue to advance.

Do you know J.B. Holmes? This 26 year old prodigy won the FBR Open in Scottsdale, AZ last year (and in 2006), crushing the ball for 4 days with enormous drives and precise irons. He is also the 2nd longest driver on Tour this year with an average drive over 311 yards!

He accomplishes this with a backswing that is well short of parallel.

Brett Wetterich is also in the top 5 in driving distance and a past winner at the Byron Nelson. His swing is also short of parallel at the top.

In addition, 22 year old Anthony Kim (at ~5′9″) routinely smashes the ball over 300 yards and ranks 9th in driving distance. His “short”, compact swing defies logic. He had 2 wins last year, a spectacular Ryder Cup, Â and is being compared to a “young” Tiger Woods.

How do they do it? These players have combined powerful, compact golf swings with today’s golf equipment technology and achieved world class results. Here is a visual representation of what I am talking about:

No

Now at this point you may be wondering:

“Well, how do I get the same power from a short swing?”

First, we are not talking about a short swing, but rather a more compact swing. Look at all the distance that heavy club head still has to travel to get back to the ball in the second picture… its a long way. There is still plenty of time to generate club head speed.

But more importantly: Your ultimate goal is Ball Speed.

That’s achieved from transferring all that club head mass powerfully into the back of the ball at impact. Club head speed is only part of the equation for ball speed.

Remember, you can have all the club head speed in the world as a result of a “huge” backswing, but miss the ball and have no ball speed. Or more commonly, hit the ball with a glancing blow (slice, hook, etc..). What a waste of effort, not to mention the strain on your back.

This back swing position is also great for people with backswing restriction due to physical limitations or age.

Here is a simple exercise you can try, if you are able, to help illustrate this point:

1) Put your arms down at your side and then slowly raise them upwards and outwards like a large bird.

2) As you approach shoulder height, you will feel impingement in the shoulder area.

You see, the arms are designed to do most of their work below the shoulder level. Excessive lifting above the shoulder plane stresses the shoulder and can cause injury. Baseball pitchers commonly suffer rotator cuff injuries, as do golfers.

When the golfer learns to stop over rotating the shoulders and over extending the arms in the backswing, he or she has taken the first step to a more compact, powerful backswing.

Critical – “Is it as simple as taking a more compact backswing?”

Not quite, and if I could explain this to you right know I would, but this is something you need to see for yourself.

It is Visual.

You see there are 3 simple but critical elements to the backswing position in the second picture.

Without them you have an inefficient swing.

But get them right and all systems are on go for a simple yet powerful return to the back of that ball at impact… and an explosion at impact!

I go into detail in the The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing exactly what these elements are and how to achieve them, and then I show you how to quickly train your body to reproduce them so the downswing swing becomes virtually automatic:

And when the backswing with these 3 three critical elements is combined with the actual Key (the Key is related to an entirely different part of the body) that is the foundation of my teaching, golfers can transform their games literally overnight.

And the experience is the same for Men, Women, and Junior golfers, whether they are picking up a club for the first time after 40, or trying to shave off those last few strokes to break 70.

And here’s my personal Guarantee to you for trying my system…

I personally guarantee that if you make a sincere effort to apply the principles in “The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing” within the next 45 days, you’ll realize lower scores and more enjoyment from your game.

I recently had an interesting discussion with a new friend who was determined to “take up golf this season”.

It’s always fun and educational to talk to a non or aspiring golfer as their different perspective brings up unique questions about the game and its details.

As a golfer, I tend to talk about golf primarily with other golfers. You may be the same.

Turns out, there are plenty of people who are fans who have never swung a golf club. I am continually reminded of that fact!

This particular person had been curious about the sport but had been reluctant to get involved because they felt they were too old to really improve to a level where it would be a worthwhile endeavor. They were also convinced that you needed to begin playing as a young child to really achieve an advanced level of play.

I pointed out that there were plenty of professional golfers who had late starts in the game.

It is well documented that Senior Tour player Larry Nelson took up golf at 21 after returning from military service in Vietnam. He went on to win 10 PGA Tournaments including 3 majors. He has also been a dominant force on the Champions Tour having won 20 titles on that venue, and was inducted into the prestigious Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.

I also noted that Ernie Els took up golf in earnest at the age of 15. His accomplishments in the sport are well documented and include 16 PGA tour events including 3 majors, and 22 European Tour events.

He is also currently the 11th best player in the world with a win on the PGA Tour in 2008.

On a personal level, I relayed that I took up this game in my early 20’s (some 25+ years ago) and only 13 months years later broke 80 for the first time.

Now I had really captured the attention of my friend. I could see the wheels of possibility spinning in her head, and a smile that this golf thing could be “doable”. Then I threw a wrench in the conversation when I added:

“But make no mistake, the golf swing is complex.”

And that’s the truth, it is. But like a lot of endeavors, when it is broken down into its components, this complicated movement is merely the sum of individual parts, most of which are quite easy to master!

Master the parts, and you’ve mastered the swing!

I like to compare the complexity of the golf swing to the task of driving a car with a manual transmission. For those of you who drive a standard or manual transmission, the process is second nature. But imagine trying to describe each step to a new driver. It may go something like this:

Start by taking your left foot off the brake and press the clutch pedal.

Now quickly shift the gear lever into first gear and slowly release your foot from the clutch pedal.

As the gear engages, push the gas pedal just enough so that the car moves forward, but not so much that the engine races, or so little that the car “bucks” and the engine stalls!

Now repeat 2 and 3 for all gears until you are at the desired speed.

Oh, and reverse the process when you want to come to a stop. It’s Simple?!

Driving a car with a manual transmission is complex for new drivers but the individual steps aren’t!

It isn’t too difficult to push the gas, depress the clutch, or shift the gear lever individually! But the better you do these things in sequence, the better driver you become. If you really master the sequence, you may have a future as a professional race car driver!

Developing a Great Golf Swing is quite the same.

In fact, it is more accurate to state that hitting a golf ball straight is complex, rather than that the swing itself is complex. Here’s a big reason why:

A golf ball sits on a tee loaded with “potential” energy. Along comes a club head moving at 80, 100, or even 120 mph! A massive collision results and the club’s energy is transferred to the ball. The ball then does exactly what the club face “told it to do”. If the club face is off line, then look out!

If you watch golf on TV, you’ve seen what happens when the top players in the world are out of sequence. With club head speeds of 120 mph, an errant sequence sends the ball wildly left or right. In many cases the player is playing his next shot from an adjacent fairway!

How does a golfer, novice or skilled, learn to create perfect impact? In more detail, how does the golfer go from Point A (Address) to Point B (Impact) on the way to Point C (Finish Position)?

Like the successful automobile clutch operator, the skilled golfer has blended the individual steps of the swing together in perfect sequence.

This goal is same for any golfer, whether they are picking up a club for the first time over the age of 40, or trying to shave off those last few strokes to break 70.

Over the past 6+ years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 5000 golfers from 61 countries the simple Key I discovered that puts their golf swing on auto pilot and delivers the club head right back through the ball, for precision shots and lower scores.

If you remember my earlier report on Proper Alignment (and the accompanying illustrations), you are already on your way to Mastering one of the simple parts/steps that comprise a solid, Tour Caliber golf swing.

Would you like to learn the other parts?

In the new 2010, 6th edition of “The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing”, I show you exactly how to deliver the club head right back through the ball at impact with tremendous power and control:

Thousands of golfers, from beginners to scratch players, have put The Key to work in their games and the results have been astounding. You can read more about their experiences all over this website.

I invite you to discover the common swing denominator shared by every great player, past and present.

Turn your body into a “golfing machine” and have the best 2010 golf season you’ve ever dreamed of with longer drives and lower scores.

And Remember, you will have Instant Access to my entire Six (6) part instructional package which now includes my new book, “Putting Rebel – Conversation with a Putting Wizard”.

Bonus: You’ll also be receiving a Personal Golf Ball Recommendation in <48 hours from a professional golf ball engineer to go with that new golf swing:

RC,

The (recommended ball) are the best balls that I have ever hit and I have hit everything over the years.

I really think I have found the correct ball for my game. Wow!

Thanks again and have a great 4th.

Golfers of all levels sabotaging their swings and scores before they even move the club back. I am talking about the all critical set-up or address position.

Most golfers can choose a target in the distance and trace an imaginary target line back through the ball. They then step in and align their toes parallel to that line… a good start to alignment.

A better golfer then aligns his or her knees and hips to that target line. Looking down, they feel aligned. Things look good and away they go. And for most high and mid handicappers (and often the best players), away goes the ball… to the rough or woods! The longer the club, the more astray the ball.

What happened Here? Well, it’s a funny thing. The golf swing is not symmetrical for a lot of reasons, but here is one of the biggest:

One hand sits below the other on the grip.

This fact instantly assures that the golf swing is not symmetrical. And this greatly influences everything about the swing.

Check this out: When a golfer has his or her lead hand (the left for a right hand golfer) on the club and then places the right hand on the grip, something interesting happens.

The trailing or right shoulder moves closer to the ball line and the lead shoulder moves away from the line.

Try it right now right where you are sitting (no club needed). Extend your lead arm and take your grip. Now add your other hand. Feel those shoulders move? It is even more pronounced when you have a club and are at address.

So when the unsuspecting golfer addresses the ball, those shoulders are pointing to the left (for the righty) of the target line. Take a look below at the version that fits your orientation. This poor, anonymous golfer is in a lot of trouble, particularly with the longer clubs:

You see, even golfers with the slowest swing speeds can generate club head speeds of 75 mph. When that club head meets the ball… look out! The arms will always have a tendency to follow those body lines, particularly the shoulders. After all they are attached to the shoulders.

Open shoulders will cause the club to cut across the ball, imparting a slice spin. Or if the club face is manipulated, a vicious hook can result. And as mentioned, the adverse side spin is exaggerated with the longer clubs, particularly the driver.

The Cure: I promised you the solution… here it is:

The following images are drawings derived directly from over head photographs of my swing (in this instance, the set-up position). In this frame I am using a long iron.

I had these images created specifically for my book, “The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing” . I commissioned a very skilled (and expensive, yikes) illustrator to create these images as I find the aerial view particularly useful to the golf student. I incorporate a lot of them throughout the book, in both right and left handed versions.

Note the grid lines on the images. I call these my “channels of success”. Study these images long and hard:

Now when you take your grip and settle into your address position, make an effort to square up those shoulders to the target line by pulling your trail shoulder back a little to compensate for your lower hand on the club. That way you will be right on track and ready to pull the trigger.

You will also find that your back swing will start straight back nicely (precisely) before it comes up and to the inside (as opposed to moving outside the line first).

The perfect set-up above starts you off in the perfect position to then put the club into a powerful top of the back swing position.

From there, you put The Key to a Repeating Golf Swing in action on the down swing.

That’s the fun part, or as I call it, the Money Part of the swing.

The Key delivers the club face right back into the ball with power and consistency. Many of my students comment that the sound of impact when using The Key is 3 dimensional and echoes down the range or fairway.

In fact, as detailed in an earlier Special Report, after I discovered and put The Key in to use, I literally crushed the face of my $300 Driver (see pictures below):

In the left photo you can see a flat spot in center of driver face. Th right image shows a concave club face… the face should be Convex!

The impact footprint on this club head (and similar marks on my irons) are a result of repetitive impacts on the center of the club face. In other words, they are the result of a repeating golf swing.

In the new, 2009 5th edition of “The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing”, I show you exactly how to deliver the club head right back through the ball at impact with tremendous power and control.

The Key is also demonstrated and illustrated for both left and right handed golfers in the full text of the ebook (and hardcopy).

Thousands of golfers, from beginners to scratch players, have put The Key to work in their games and the results have been astounding.

In fact, I have received over 500 unsolicited testimonials from transformed golfers of ages 13 to 87. You can read many of them all around this site.

This is the most important report I have ever written.

After 20+ years of matching golfers with the right golf ball, I’ve concluded that there is a huge misconception regarding golf balls, the golf swing, and how the 2 combine to create more distance, control, and lower scores.

These days, one can scarcely turn on the TV or open a golf magazine without hearing someone exclaiming the virtues of more club head or swing speed.

For example, you’ll often hear:

* To hit it further you need more club head speed.
* More swing speed or club head speed will take you to the next level.
* This new swing gadget will increase your swing speed!

Golfers, here’s the little known truth:

To really improve, every golfer needs to focus on their Ball Speed.

What is Golf Ball Speed? Ball Speed is the speed of the ball (typically reported in mph) as it leaves the club face. Here are some typical values:

Golf Driver Swing Speed (mph)

Golf Ball Speed (mph)

80

110

90

130

105

155

Notice the ball speeds are higher. Why? Because when that heavy club head transfers its momentum to the high energy, light ball, the “conservation of momentum” principle says the velocity of the ball must increase.

That’s great news for us golfers, because more ball speed = more distance.

But here is the Most Important Point:

The truth is that you don’t need to increase your swing speed to increase your ball speed and gain more distance.

Read that line again, it is critical golfers at every level of the game understand that point.

Now this is fantastic news for golfers who may have limited range of motion, or men, women, or junior golfers with slower swing speeds.

Here is another way to look at it. You can have “high” club head speed and zero (0) ball speed if you swing and miss!

Or if you have a slice or hook, you are losing loads of ball speed due to your slice/hook side spin.

If that misplaced club force is causing the ball to spin sideways, it is not compressing the ball and “pushing” it down the fairway. What a waste!

Let’s look at an example:

“The Young Gun”

“Birdie Man”

Tony – Age 28

Driver Distance 265

So what’s going on here?:

* Jim is maximizing his distance and overall performance by using the right golf ball matched for his swing speed.

* Jim has a very efficient golf swing with no power leaks. Even though he has a lot less swing speed than young Tony, he compresses the ball more efficiently and therefore generates more distance (and control).

The Right Ball ==> No Swing Power Leaks ==> More Ball Speed ==> More Distance

I have the privilege of working with golfers of all abilities, from high hcp golfers and those brand new to the game, to scratch players and tournament professionals.

I recently did a ball fitting and game analysis for Alwyn, a gentleman from Australia. He was very determined to optimize his game and get to the next level.

He had average swing speed, very poor driver distance, and an intermittent slice that reared its ugly head at all the wrong times.

A few weeks later I received this genuine, unsolicited note from Alwyn:

“30 metres longer”

“Hi Robert,

Thank you for the golf ball recommendation. You were perfectly on the mark when you said the “right ball” would save 5 strokes a round.

I tried the recommended stance, etc, on the practice range; then I took your advice and bought a sleeve of the RB balls like you suggested.

I then played in my club Stableford competition and scored a “41″ being 5 strokes under my handicap with my game improving on almost every hole.

My friends noted that I was driving about 30 metres longer than normal, with a much reduced slice; only into the rough on 2 shots.

My “3″ wood on the fairways was also about 20 metres longer.

Thanks again for the advice and looking forward to my next round.”

Alwyn B. – Australia

RB = Recommended Ball
